Planning Your Export Business The Standards Puzzle: Competing and Winning in International Trade

Standards facilitate mutual understanding and are absolutely necessary to communication, measurement, manufacturing, and trade.  According to the International Trade Administration, “92 percent of U.S. goods exports in 2015, and 93 percent of all goods exports worldwide, were affected by standards-related measures.” Source: https://www.trade.gov/td/standards/. In the context of international trade, standards enable exporters to place products on the market.  They offer transparent, fair, and open competition.  But what if standards are used to protect domestic champions or limit market access to foreign companies? The second of a four-part export series, The Standards Puzzle: Competing and Winning and International Trade will provide attendees with the basics of conformity, help them to understand when an issue is a business challenge or a technical, tariff or non-tariff barrier to trade, and what to do about barriers that are unfair and contrary to international law.

Please join Ken Mouradian of the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Orlando U.S. Export Assistance Center, Dan Sutter, FloridaMakes’ Business Advisor, and Sigrid Simpson of the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Office of Trade Agreements Negotiation and Compliance (TANC) for a discussion of standards, both, as enablers and inhibitors of export sales.  This webinar is an absolute must for any company that exports or plans to export throughout Florida.  With the United States only being 4.29% of the world’s population and about a quarter of its purchasing power, can your company afford to miss out?

The first of a four-part series, Planning Your Export Business (July 16) provides an overview, which will be followed by more in-depth sessions including Standards Conformity and Barriers to Trade (September 10), Risk Management (November 19), and Export Compliance (January 14).
